Michelle McGrath & Associates, LLC (MMA) was established in 2004 as a global Risk Management Company designed to provide professional security services to corporate, public and private entities. MMA integrates a risk management and threat assessment into every close protection detail, from medical assistance, security guidance and monitoring, including staff vetting, secure transportation, and quality assurance for off-site events. MMA professionals provide Executive Protection coverage for the longest civil rights organization for the past eight years. Their staff of accomplished female protective agents span nationwide.

Self Defense & Awareness Training

Each seminar offers women educational opportunities along with hands-on offensive and defensive techniques. Topics covered include:

Common mistakes women make when going to/from their vehicle
Personal safety at home, in public, and during travel
Active shooter response and workplace violence
Recognizing and preventing attacks or unwanted approaches
Self-defense techniques for quickly stopping an attacker
Improvised weapons when conventional ones aren’t available
Campus and dorm room security
Criminal trends targeting women, such as sexual assault and date rape, plus insights from accomplished female protective agents

Recent events

A Preventable Assassination

The events surrounding the assassination of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson are tragic. A lone assassin waited for hours outside a hotel in downtown Manhattan before casually approaching Mr. Thompson from behind and firing three shots, killing him. The police have labeled this as a "targeted attack."

As a Personal Protection Specialist (Executive Protection Agent) with over 16 years of experience providing close personal protection for CEOs, at-risk clients, and VIPs, I find it hard to understand why a company with annual revenues of $281.4 billion and a CEO salary of $10.2 million did not have a security detail assigned to Mr. Thompson and his family.

What Has Been Reported:

Threats had been made in the past against Mr. Thompson and his family.
The assassin was seen waiting for hours outside the hotel.
Casings were found at the scene with the words "Deny, Delay, Defend," which could be a reference to a book by Jay M. Feinman, which exposes insurance injustices, including delay and denial of payments and defending such actions through litigation.
The assassin wore black clothing and a face covering.
The assassin fled on foot and later obtained a bicycle to aid in his escape.

What Executive Protection Agents Would Have Done to Prevent, Deter, and Protect Mr. Thompson:

A thorough threat assessment would have been conducted for Mr. Thompson and his family.
A detailed investigation of both past and current threats would have been completed.
A protection detail would have been assigned to both the CEO and his family.
The advance team would have investigated and interviewed anyone seen loitering near the hotel.
The assassin knew of the CEO’s arrival and location. How and why was this information made public or leaked?
A call to local police to investigate the individual wearing black clothing and a face covering could have led to a search or pat-down, which might have uncovered the handgun.
Hotels typically have multiple entrances. It is common for a security detail to use lesser-known entrances, especially when a threat has been identified.
Agents would have ensured the CEO did not exit the vehicle until safe passage to the entrance was confirmed.
Agents would have positioned themselves in front and behind the CEO for additional protection.

No Guarantees: While there are no guarantees that a security detail could have fully prevented the assassination of Mr. Thompson, the risk would have been significantly reduced. Multi-million- or billion-dollar corporations should consider providing personal protection security for their top leadership when traveling or conducting business outside of the office.
